Why Google Cuts Titles by Pixels, Not Characters

A Google result has a fixed width. Titles are set in 20px Arial and cut off at about 600 pixels; descriptions in 14px Arial at about 990. An "i" is a quarter the width of a "W", so two 60-character titles can end at very different places. This preview measures the actual width, the same way the free SEO audit scores your title and description.

How to Write a Title and Meta Description That Fit

  1. 1

Load a page or start typing

Enter a URL to pull in its current title and meta description, or write new ones in the fields.

  2. 2

    Watch the pixel bars

Google cuts titles at about 600 pixels and descriptions at about 990, not at a character count. Wide letters like W and M use up the space faster.

  3. 3

    Front-load what matters

Put the primary keyword and the reason to click first, so a cut-off still reads well.

  4. 4

    Ship it and re-check

Update the title and meta description on the page, then load the URL here again to confirm what Google will read.

The free audit scores the title and description the same way, plus headings, canonicals, schema, links and AI-search readiness.

SERP Snippet FAQ

How long should a title tag be?

Under about 600 pixels, which is usually 50 to 60 characters. Google measures width, not characters, so a title full of capitals or W's is cut sooner.

How long should a meta description be?

About 140 to 160 characters, under roughly 990 pixels on desktop. Shorter is fine if it says what the page offers; very short descriptions are often replaced.

Why does Google show a different title or description from mine?

Google rewrites titles and descriptions it judges unhelpful for the search: too long, stuffed with keywords, or not matching the page. A clear title that matches the H1 is rewritten far less.

Is pixel width exact?

Close. The preview measures text in Arial at the size Google uses on desktop. Google's layout shifts slightly between devices and experiments, so leave a little margin.

Is the SERP preview free?

Yes. Editing runs entirely in your browser; only loading a URL fetches the page.
