Hidden character remover

Copied text often carries characters you cannot see: zero-width spaces, private-use glyphs, variation selectors and non-breaking spaces. This tool finds each one, shows its code point, and strips them so your text is clean plain Unicode. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to remove hidden characters from text

  1. 1

    Paste your text

Copy text from a web page, document, PDF or AI assistant and paste it into the input box. Nothing is uploaded; the cleaning runs in your browser.

  2. 2

    Review the detected characters

The scan lists each hidden character class it found with exact code points and counts, so you can see what was actually embedded.

  3. 3

    Choose your cleaning rules

Invisible characters are removed by default. Optionally normalise smart quotes, dashes, ellipses and trailing whitespace.

  4. 4

    Copy the cleaned text

Copy the output and paste it into your CMS, doc or editor. The result is plain Unicode with no invisible markers.

Frequently asked questions

Where do hidden characters come from?

Copying from web pages, PDFs, word processors and AI chat tools can bring along zero-width spaces, non-breaking spaces, private-use glyphs and variation selectors. Most are formatting leftovers. Some can also be added deliberately, for example to hide instructions inside text or to mark a copy.

Is this an AI watermark remover?

No. It finds and removes hidden Unicode characters, and nothing else. AI watermarking usually works by biasing which words a model picks, so the mark lives in the wording itself and not in extra characters. Provenance metadata such as C2PA is attached to files, not to plain text. Cleaning characters removes neither.

Which characters does it strip?

Zero-width spaces and joiners, word joiner and BOM, private use area glyphs, variation selectors, Unicode tag characters, bidi and formatting controls, plus optional normalisation of unusual spaces, smart quotes, dashes and ellipses.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The scan and clean run entirely client side in your browser. The text never leaves your device and nothing is stored.

Why do invisible characters matter for SEO?

Hidden characters can break exact match search, corrupt slugs and JSON-LD values, and inflate character counts in titles and meta descriptions. Clean plain Unicode is safer for both search engines and answer engines.
