Favicon checker
Find every icon a site declares, check that each one actually loads, and see whether it has the sizes Google Search, iPhone and Android home screens look for. Free, no account.
Use your homepage: that is where Google and browsers look.
How to check a website's favicon
- 1
Paste your homepage URL
Google reads the favicon from your home page, so check that first. Other pages usually share the same icons.
- 2
Review every icon found
The checker lists icon link tags, the apple-touch-icon, web app manifest icons and /favicon.ico, and loads each one to confirm it works.
- 3
Fix broken or missing icons
Replace any icon that returns an error, and add the ones flagged as missing: a 48 px multiple or SVG for Google, 180 px for iPhone, 192 and 512 px for Android.
- 4
Wait for Google to recrawl
Google refreshes favicons when it recrawls your home page, which can take a few days to a few weeks.
Check the rest of the site too
The free audit checks icons alongside titles, social tags, schema, links and AI-search readiness.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a favicon be?
Ship an SVG or a 48 × 48 PNG for browsers and Google, a 180 × 180 PNG apple-touch-icon for iPhone and iPad, and 192 × 192 plus 512 × 512 icons in a web app manifest for Android. A favicon.ico at the site root covers older tools.
Why isn't my favicon showing in Google?
Google needs a <link rel="icon"> on the home page pointing at an icon that is a multiple of 48 px square (or SVG), crawlable by Googlebot, and on the same site. It then shows up after Google recrawls the home page.
Do I still need favicon.ico?
Browsers use the icon in your link tags first, but bookmarks, feed readers and some tools still request /favicon.ico directly. Keeping one at the root avoids a stream of 404s.
What is an apple-touch-icon?
The icon iOS uses when someone adds your site to their home screen. Without it, the shortcut shows a tiny screenshot of the page. Use a 180 × 180 PNG with no transparency.
Can my favicon be an SVG?
Yes. All modern browsers and Google Search support SVG favicons, which stay sharp at every size and can even switch colours for dark mode. Keep a PNG apple-touch-icon alongside it, since iOS doesn't use SVG for home-screen icons.
